 Established on the 29th of September 2000, the Association of South-Western Municipalities (ASWM) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization uniting 26 municipalities from the South-western region of Bulgaria. The aims of the Association are to promote and represent the binding interest of its members at all policy levels; to coordinate the activities of its members in resolving local problems and developing local government; to provide a variety of quality services; and, promote civil participation at local level. The range of permanent activities carried out by the Association are to: contact regional and national institutions to promote the rights and needs of its members; contact non-governmental organizations while representing the binding interest of its members; provide information about services to its members; conduct trainings, work meetings, forums, conferences, etc. on issues relevant to its members; publish and disseminate information relevant to the municipalities; develop and take part in the implementation of projects and programmes of inter-municipal and regional significance; provide consulting, expertise and technical assistance to its member, etc. The management of the Association are General Council, in which all member municipalities are represented by delegates; Management Committee, consisting of a Chairman, Deputy Chairman and five members; a Controller, Deputy Controller and executive staff. Members of the Association of the South-western Municipalities are the following 26 municipalities: Bansko, Belitsa, Blagoevgrad, Boboshevo, Botevgrad, Dolna banya, Dragoman, Elin Pelin, Garmen, Gorna Malina, Gotse Delchev, Hadjidimovo, Ihtiman, Kocherinovo, Kostinbrod, Kresna, Petrich, Razlog, Rila, Sandanski, Satovcha, Simitli, Slivnitsa, Strumyani, Svoge,and Treklyano. Across the policy levels dealing with local governance, ASWM operates with a wide and well established network of partners and stakeholders such as: “The Foundation for Local Government Reform”, National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria, all regional associations of municipalities and professional associations of municipal employees, agencies for economic development, commercial and industrial chambers, and many others. Municipality of Strumica, Macedonia

Strumica is a municipality located in the southwestern part of the Republic of Macedonia.

The municipality covers the villages in Strumica field along the middle reaches of the river Strumica and has an area of 321,89 km2. East municipality borders with Bosilovo municipality, west of Horse Town, north with the Municipality of Vasilevo, to the southeast with the Municipality of Novo Selo and the southwest with the municipality of Valandovo. The municipality except the city of Strumica also includes 24 villages with a total of 54 676 inhabitants and a population density of 170.07 inhabitants per km2. Mayor - Zoran Zaev.

Petrich municipality occupies the southwestern part of Bulgaria and borders Greece and Macedonia. Covers Petrich valley, Bulgarian mountains Belasitza Fencing and part of the southern Pirin (total area of 650 square kilometers).

Petrich municipality is actively Balkan and European crossroads between two seas - is located 90 km from the port of Thessaloniki on the Aegean Sea, where Bulgaria has a neutral sector for trade in the Mediterranean, and 380 km from the port of Vlore in Albania on the Adriatic.

The municipality has 55 settlements with a total population of 54,006 inhabitants (according 1st February 2011). Mayor- Dimitar Brachkov.

 

The Centre for development of the South – East planning region is one of the 8 centres in R. Macedonia, formed in accordance with the law of Balanced Regional Development. It consists of 10 municipalities in the region and extends across a 2835 km2 area with a population of 171 416 inhabitants. Planning for regional development in the South – East represents one of the fundamental steps towards fulfilling the mission of the regional centre for development. In addition, the centre for regional development in the South-East region marks the beginning of the process for identification, promotion, management and utilizing developmental potentials of the South – East planning region. The policy of regional development of the South – East region is a system of objectives, instruments and measures aimed to reduce regional disparities and achieve balanced and sustainable regional development. This will be accomplished through: increasing cooperation among planning regions by capacity building, optimizing and valorizating natural wealth, human capital and economic characteristics of the different regions, conserving, developing and promoting the special identity of planning regions, revitalizing the villages, developing areas with the specific needs, supporting inter-municipal and cross-boarder cooperation of local self-government units to promote balanced regional development and increase the quality of life for the citizens in the region. The Centre for development of the planning region shall perform the following tasks: Prepare the proposed program for development of the planning region Prepare the proposed action plan for implementation of the program for development of the planning region Prepare project proposal for development of the planning region and for the areas with special development needs Coordinate the activities related with implementation of the program for development of the planning region and realize the projects for development of the planning region Provide information to all stakeholders for the realization of program for development of the planning region and other issues related to regional development Provide professional and technical assistance to the local self government units for preparing development programs Provide professional services to the Associations for citizens and other stakeholders for preparating projects related to regional development Promote inter municipal cooperation in the frame of planning development Implement project for promoting development of the planning region, financed by EU funds and other international sources Promote developmental potentials of the planning region Provide professional, administrative and technical tasks for the needs of the Council for development of the planning region.
